Abwoon d'bshmaya (The Lord's Prayer in Aramaic)

This is a bit more than a chant - it’s the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke. This particular version is from the Peshitta, the Old and New testaments in Syriac, a dialect of Eastern Aramaic. I learned Aramaic from the Israeli Biblical Institute so the accent is a bit more on the Hebrew side. The tune for this version emerged over a few days, mostly on awakening from sleep.

I find myself praying this in the background of daily life, and often return to it when I wake in the middle of the night. A couple of written versions are below. As a short version you could just chant “abwoon” - try it and see!

Abwoon d'bashmaya,
Nethqadash shmakh,
Teytey malkuthakh.
Nehwey tzevyanach aykanna d'bashmaya aph b'arha.
Hawvlan lachma d'sunqanan yaomana.
Veshboqlan khaubayn
aykana daph khnan shbwoqan l'khayyabayn.
Vela tahlan l'nesyuna.
Ela patzan min bisha.
Mettul dilakhie malkutha vehayla veteshbukhta, l'olam olmin. Amen
